Brady Bunch-Compare and Contrast

It's me, Carol, with Marcia, Jan and Cindy!

I remember watching Brady Bunch reruns as a child and loving them.  I remember thinking that they had such a big family!  I came from a family of 4 children but we were spread out over 13 years, so it didn't seem near as big as the Brady's.  Well, lately my children have been watching some of the Brady Bunch reruns and many times I just walk away laughing.  I never realized until lately how very "fake" the whole show is.  My kids pick-up on it too and think it's funny.  So, here are some things I've noticed that are so different from our family.  (I thought some of you other 70's kids might get a chuckle from this)

1.  Their rooms are always so clean! When I mentioned this to my children they all yelled, "Well, mom, they have Alice there all the time!"

2.  Their drawers in their bedrooms actually close. (My son said that is because there are no clothes in them....he's so smart : )

3. Everyone is always immaculately dressed, down to their shoes.  Even their pajamas are so cute and stylish.

4.  Speaking of appearances, their hair is also always perfect, Mrs. Brady especially. Oh, and what's up with Cindy's hair always being in perfect pig tails?

5.  Alice seems to be cooking great food all the time, ( my husband said that sometimes Carol is helping.)  I wish there was one show where the kids went to eat her food and didn't like it.

6.   Speaking of Alice, she is always happy and basically doing all the household things, so what does Mrs. Brady actually even do? I guess just work out their "30 minute" problems.

7.  And speaking of 30 minutes problems.... none of their problems are so severe that they can't be fixed in 30 minutes!

8.  They eat all their meals together.  Actually we strive to do this too so I think this is great.  It sad that our society has gotten so away from eating meals, especially dinner together.

9.  There is so much drama around any one's illness or injury.  Like when Mrs. Brady lost her voice, you would of thought she was dying of cancer.  And when Cindy sneezed twice, they called the doctor.

10.  Mrs. Brady never seems to disagree with Mr. Brady...hmmmm.

11.  The kids are always having secret meetings without the parents to make plans and figure things out.  I don't think my kids have ever had one secret meeting!  But I guess if I knew about it, then it wouldn't be secret : )

12.  The lawn is perfect.  Actually, it's probably fake grass and I've seen them mow it!

Well, I'm sure there are more and I would love to hear any of your comparisons : )

  1. Oh my gosh I thought I was the only one and a terrible mom because I have the drawer closing problem! Yay for it being wide spread. Well not yay I mean its frustrating that they have too many closes but never ones you need, they stuff mixed seasons into these drawers making the bundle in front that wont close. They break every dresser they have, each one of them (I only have 5 kids), and the little kids continue the damage by using the open drawers as a ladder. I wonder where else I am not alone.

  2. I wish I knew you Becca. You are so down to earth. Come to think of it, kind of like Carol...:):):) How often we compare and don't need to. I am one of those who would clean for the maid, so no point really. How about those boys? My five wrestle, scream, fight, swords, karate, or conversely they might be glued to a screen or legos. I don't remember Greg pinning Bobby down until he called Uncle! Come to think of it, did Bobby ever cry? On TV?

  3. LOL!!!! And, yes we have the drawer problem around here also.
I wish I had an Alice to do all my cooking, cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping(remember that's how she met sam the butcher), babysitting, etc etc.
I used to LOVE that show, it seemed like such a real family to me back then. Ha! Now I know how it really is to have a large family!

  5. Oh, I remember watching and loving Brady Bunch when I was growing up in the 70s! It is a little superficial and fake -- but my kids still love watching it! It is fun, light-hearted family-friendly entertainment! And, IMO, so much better than modern shows, such as Hannah Montana or Suite Life of Zack and Cody. :)

We do laugh when they call the doctor because someone has the sniffles! :)

I can't find your email address -- would you please email me at busymomof10@gmail.com? Thanks!
